Zoe Ann McQuade

Zoe McQuade, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Sunrise Memory Care in Sioux City. 

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Christy-Smith Funeral Home-Larkin Chapel on Outer Belt Drive with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at Larkin Chapel.

Zoe Ann, daughter of Charles and Violet (Koftan) Slattery, was born December 5, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa. The fourth of five children, Zoe grew up in Sioux City and graduated from East High School. Zoe then worked with friends in Chicago for a year before taking a clerical position with the Department of the Navy in the Pentagon where she met Arthur Biddle.

On July 5, 1949, Zoe was united in marriage with Arthur Biddle. This marriage with blessed with three children: Eileen, Karen and Mike. The family lived in Indiana for short time before settling in Sioux City. Arthur passed away in 1956.

On January 22, 1962, Zoe was blessed with a second marriage, this time with Doug McQuade at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City. Two children were born to this couple: Mark and Shelly. The family lived in the Morningside area and in 1973, moved into a new home in Sergeant Bluff. Throughout the years, Zoe worked at Ben Franklin, Bomgaars and True Value, as well as, doing books for Doug’s trucking business. Doug passed away in 2008.

A faithful church member, Zoe attended Immaculate Conception, contributed significantly to the formation of the new Nativity Parish when it branched from Immaculate Conception Parish, and attended St. Joseph when they moved to Sergeant Bluff. She was active in the Tabernacle Society and served many funeral luncheons. Zoe also enjoyed home life on the acreage, lovingly taking in family members as needed and caring for her garden and animals. Zoe was a member of the Parent’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hat Society and Quilting Guild. In her later years, her two favorite activities were watching the weather and working at/shopping in the bargain center.

Zoe is survived by 4 children: Mike (Darlene) Biddle of Osage City, Kansas; Karen Royalty of Sergeant Bluff; Mark (Pamela) McQuade of Cedar Rapids; Shelly Sadler of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren (with 1 on the way); a sister Mary Johnson of Sioux City; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Arthur Biddle and Doug McQuade; a daughter Eileen Biddle Schleis; a son-in-law Jon Sadler; and three siblings: Bill Slattery, Don Slattery and Kay Miller.

Zoe will be missed greatly by her family and friends. Her family would like to extend their appreciation to the thoughtful and loving care given by Larry Neihus and the staffs of Sunrise Memory Care and St. Croix Hospice. Memorial donations will be directed to Sunrise Memory Care.
