Virginia Gale Pruehs, 89, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at Countryside Senior Living following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with Jennifer Santer officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to

Virginia was born Dec. 28, 1918, in Allen, Neb., to Burton D. and Martha Irene (Surber) Smith. She graduated from East High School and later attended classes at the National Business Training and Western Iowa Tech Community College.
She married Edward H. Pruehs on June 23, 1938, in Le Mars, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Dick, Linda and David. The marriage was dissolved in 1976. She worked as a secretary for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company until she took a long leave of absence to raise her three children. Later, she returned to work as a bookkeeper for Sioux City Serum Company.
She was a longtime member of Morningside Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Altheans Mothers' Club and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was active in the church's women's organizations serving on the executive board and holding various other offices. She was president of the women's executive board from 1962 to 1963 and was a delegate to the national meeting of Church Women United at Purdue University in 1964. She received an honorary membership on the Board of National Missions in 1967 and was honored as "Presbyterian of the Year" in 1972. She served in the church library board from 1970 until 2000 and served two years on the Christian Educational Council, one as chairperson. She was elected as elder in 1966 and served three three-year terms on the church session. She served a one year term on the Northwest Presbytery and a one year term on their Presbytery Council. She was a past president of the Marterians.
She was also active in community groups such as a member of the P.E.O. Chapter JG, Miercoles Study Club, T.T.T. Club, Sioux City Women's Club, Daughters of the American Revolution Martha Washington Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star Lodge 502 and various writing clubs.
Survivors include three children and their spouses, Dick and Marcia Pruehs of Sioux City, Linda and Michael Pratt of Dubuque, Iowa, and David and Barbara Pruehs of Grand Rapids, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha Irene (Surber) Smith Konat and Burton D. Smith.
