V. Madaline "Madaline" Painter (McCain)

V. Madaline Painter, 99, of Crooks, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at Sanford U.S.D. Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Michelle Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel in Sioux City.

Madaline was born Feb. 20, 1908, in Rippey, Iowa, the daughter of George J. and Lillie I. (Mercer) McCain. She was raised in Rippey and had lived in Des Moines.

She married J. Carl Painter on May 3, 1928, in Des Moines. He died July 27, 1988, in South Sioux City. Following her marriage, the family moved to Sioux City. She was employed as a hostess at Bishop's Cafeteria. She then became a homemaker after her children were born. She moved to Sioux Falls 13 years ago to be with her daughter.

She was a longtime member of Whitfield United Methodist Church and served as the superintendent of the church kindergarten department for several years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, where she served as a former president. During the years her family was growing up, she was president of the Roosevelt School P.T.A. and a den mother for the Cub Scouts.

Survivors include her daughter, Kay Peterson of Crooks, S.D.; a son and his wife, Jon and Dina Painter of Euless, Texas; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Rex C. Painter and H. Roy Painter; a grandson, Todd Painter; and two brothers, Holsey and Harold McCain.

Pallbearers will be Scott Burggraff, Josh and Ryan Stroschein, David Peterson and Carl Fredricksen III.
