Paul Dean Armstrong, a devoted police officer and cherished family man, passed away on August 29, 2025, in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 87. Born on March 26, 1938, in New Castle, Nebraska, to Sterling and Lola (Bagley) Armstrong. Paul lived a life marked by service, dedication, and love for his family, friends, and community.
After graduating from Central High School in Sioux City in 1956, where he excelled in football and track, He married Nancy Taft in 1957 and had the couple later divorced. Paul later married Janell Rager Daws on May 2, 1975, in Omaha, NE. Paul enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1955 to 1963. Following his military service, he embarked on a long and fruitful career as a police officer with the Sioux City Police Department. Over the span of thirty years, Paul achieved the rank of Sergeant, dedicating himself tirelessly to the safety and well-being of his community before retiring in 1993. His commitment to service extended beyond his role as a police officer; he also worked part-time at Braungers, Dressed Beef, and Raskins.
Paul was known not only for his professional life but also for his profound love of family. He is survived by his wife Janell Armstrong, beloved children: LuAnn (Rick) Nichols, Brad (Beth) Armstrong, Don (Kammy) Armstrong, Greg Rager, Glenn (Kari) Rager, and Shirley Armstrong. Paul's legacy continues through his 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, the exciting news of a great-great-grandchild on the way, a sister, Margaret "Peg" Thompson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his family, Paul was a proud member of Restoration Church and the Sioux City Policeman's Association. Every morning, he found solace in reading his Bible, which served as a guiding light throughout his life. Paul enjoyed spending his free time engaged in hobbies that brought him joy, including fishing, playing computer games, and enjoying softball in his younger years. Furthermore, he was a passionate Cornhusker fan, cheering for his team with unwavering enthusiasm.
Paul is predeceased by his parents, Sterling Armstrong and Lola (Bagley) Armstrong, three sisters, Shirley Chase, Jean Molitor and Loretta Chase.
A visitation will be held in his honor on September 2, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes - Morningside Chapel located at 1801 Morningside Ave, Sioux City, IA 51106. Following the visitation, a Celebration of Life service will commence at 10:30 AM with Pastor Johnny Helton from Restoration Church officiating at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes - Morningside Chapel located at 1801 Morningside Ave, Sioux City, IA 51106. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
As we remember Paul Dean Armstrong, we celebrate a life defined by commitment, faith, and a deep love for family and community. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
