Muriel "Max" Maxwell

Muriel D. "Max" Maxwell, 70, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, at his residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del L. Olivier officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m. followed by a prayer service, at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Muriel "Max" Maxwell was born Jan. 4, 1937, in Cowlington, Okla., the son of Eugene and Vera (Runley) Maxwell. At the age of 13, he moved with his family to Chowchilla, Calif., where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1955. He continued his education at Fresno City College until joining the U.S. Army. He served with the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper. After his honorable discharge, he continued his education at Sacramento State and received his bachelor's degree. He worked for Great Western Bank.

He married Janet Grant on Dec. 16, 1978, in Reno, Nev. They moved to Moville, Iowa, in 1997 and to Sioux City in 2001.

He attended Augustana Lutheran Church. He was a member of Riverside Lodge 662 A.F. & A.M., Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies and Abu Bekr Shriners. He was active with the White Horse Patrol, the Foot Patrol, Hospital Dads, Animal Unit, Vintage Wheels and ROJ. Before moving to Moville and Sioux City, he had been active with the Nevada Rotary Club and had served as president of the Chamber of Commerce in Nevada in 1976 and 1977.

He loved golfing, working in his garden and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Maxwell of Sioux City; three daughters, Renee Maxwell of Portland, Ore., Kelly and her husband, Ken Perkins of Lake Charles, La., and Tammy and her husband, Steve Carmassi of Eldorado Hills, Calif.; four grandchildren, Bradley, Hunter, Nicole and Stephanie; and a sister and her husband, Doris and Bruce Fennell of Bakersfield, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and a brother.
