Morris E. King

Morris E. King, 90, of Sioux City died Sunday, June 24, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Monsignor Roger J. Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.

Mr. King was born July 31, 1916, in Conde, S.D., the son of Thomas E. and Mary Ann (Lenz) King. He was raised in Conde and graduated from Conde High School in 1933. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

He married Helen Knost on Dec. 6, 1941, in St. Cloud, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. Following his discharge, the family lived in Fort Wayne, Ind., then Watertown, S.D. The family moved to Sioux City in 1957.

He was employed at the Fort Wayne Medical Lab. He then worked for St. Vincent Hospital in Sioux City as the head medical lab technician. He retired in 1980. After his retirement, he worked for a period of time at the reservation hospital in Winnebago, Neb.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council 743. He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and a former member of the Senior Citizen Center. He was very athletic and participated in all three major sports in high school. He also enjoyed playing golf and working crossword puzzles. He was a former member of the American Legion Monahan Post 64. He liked spending time with his family and going out to dinner with both family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Helen May of Sioux City; a son, William Jude King of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Marilyn Ann and Jim Ritz of Des Moines; three grandchildren and their spouses, Gina and Jake De Voogd of Des Moines, Roger and Chris Ritz of Omaha and Rob and Kristy Ritz of Kansas City, Mo.; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Clement, Thomas and Kenneth King.
