Maxine J. Shinkunas (Bernard)

June 29, 1925 — September 16, 2007

Maxine J. Shinkunas, 82, formerly of Sioux City and Jefferson, S.D., passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at the Bishop Drumm Home in Johnston, Iowa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nativity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 4:30 p.m. rosary by Confraternity of Christian Mothers and a 7 p.m. parish vigil service, at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Maxine J. Shinkunas was born June 29, 1925, on a farm outside of Jefferson, S.D., the daughter of Freeman and Louise (Beauschemin) Bernard. After childhood in Jefferson, Maxine moved to Sioux City in 1943.

She married the late Joseph J. Shinkunas on May 1, 1946, at Epiphany Cathedral and lived in Sioux City most of her life. In 2005, she moved to Bishop Drumm Nursing Home in Johnston and spent her remaining days at the home, which is near her daughter, Sue Huygens.

Maxine belonged to St. Boniface Parish for 34 years. She served as vice president of the Rosary Society. Maxine and Joe moved to Morningside and joined St. Casimir's Church, where she belonged to the Rosary Society. She also served as a board member of the Carmelites and belonged to Catholic Daughters of America. After St. Casimir's closed, she joined Nativity, where she belonged to the Fraternity of Christian Mothers.

Maxine and her husband, Joe, enjoyed playing cards and going to dances with their many friends at Shore Acres and the Auditorium with Eddie Skeets. Maxine was blessed with a loving family and very dear friends.

She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Sue and Chuck Huygens of Urbandale, Iowa; two sons, Joe Shinkunas of Denver, Colo. and Doug Shinkunas of Dubuque, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tanya and Mike Winegard, Scott Shinkunas, Todd and Laura Shinkunas, Sara and August Sandberg and Mark and Nikki Huygens; two great-grandchildren, Gabe and Noah Winegard; and many nieces and nephews, who all loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Diane; brothers, Jim and Roy Bernard; and a sister, Arlene Bulit.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, Bob, Bill and Brandon Bulit; and her grandsons, Scott and Todd Shinkunas and Mark Huygens.
