It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary LeeAnn Cummings, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose love and devotion shaped generations of her family.
Mary was born on January 5, 1942, to Lena and Luburtus Groote in Sibley, Iowa. In 1957, she met the love of her life, Harland Cummings, and just two years later they were married. Together they built a life rooted in faith, hard work, and family. Among their many adventures, some of their fondest memories were made during their years farming in Colorado. They shared 65 loving years of marriage and a lifetime of cherished memories.
Together, Mary and Harland raised three sons, whom she loved fiercely throughout her life. No matter their age, she never stopped worrying about them, checking in on them, and offering advice, whether it was requested or not. Her love was steadfast, enduring, and unmistakable. She was their mother in every sense of the word, always present, always caring, and always in their corner.
As a grandmother, Mary had a remarkable gift for making every grandchild feel special. She was their biggest cheerleader, offering encouragement freely and celebrating even the smallest accomplishments. Whether admiring a garden, a handmade quilt, or a new endeavor, she always found something to praise and a reason to be proud.
Her talents and passions included crocheting, sewing, gardening, and many of the hobbies she lovingly shared with those around her. More importantly, she shared her unwavering support, kindness, and belief in the people she loved. She encouraged family members to pursue their dreams, offering confidence and reassurance even while quietly worrying about them every step of the way.
Mary took great joy in watching her family grow. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and her great-grandchildren brought her endless delight. With each new generation, she seemed to find even more love to give. She cherished every opportunity to spend time with them and took immense pride in the beautiful chaos that accompanied a house full of energetic children. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were all blessed to experience her nurturing spirit, wisdom, encouragement, unconditional love, infectious laugh, and comforting smile.
Mary leaves behind a legacy far greater than the years she lived. She leaves the family she nurtured, the lives she influenced, and the countless memories she helped create. Though she will be deeply missed, her love remains woven into the hearts of those who knew her and in the generations she helped shape.
Her family will miss her dearly, but they will forever be grateful for the love, guidance, laughter, and unwavering devotion she brought into their lives.
She is survived by her sons, Harland Mark (LaRae) Cummings, Terry (Peg) Cummings, Brad (Amy) Cummings; her grandchildren, Colton (Michelle) Cummings, Nicole (Kyle) Burright, Heather (George) Dutrey, Kristin (Mike) Havlik, Colby (Tacy) Cummings, Callin (Veronika) Cummings, and Autumn (Chris) Carparelli; and over twenty great and great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harland LeRoy Cummings; mother, Lena Groote; her father, Luburtus Groote; her brothers, Milton and John Groote; and grandson, Harland Jesse.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel (1801 Morningside Ave) with Visitation taking place one hour prior. Her final resting place will be Rose Hill Cemetery in Luther, Iowa.
