Mary Margaret Beeson (Hawkins)

January 8, 1925 — January 3, 2008

Mary Margaret (Hawkins) Beeson, lifelong resident of the Sioux City area, died peacefully at the home of her daughter on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008.

Mary Margaret has embarked on her life's next adventure. Friends are invited to cheer her on. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church (Riverside) in Sioux City. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, one hour prior to services, with a luncheon to follow. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Larkin Chapel.

Born on Jan. 8, 1925, to Ed and Mary (Sheahan) Hawkins, Mary Margaret would have been 83 years old this week. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1943, and married John S. Beeson, son of John G. and Amelia (Siebert) Beeson at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, that same year.

Mary Margaret and John, hard workers who saw opportunity in the nation's post-World War II prosperity, owned and operated Beeson's Groceries at 27th and Court until 1967. They were members of St. Joseph parish until 1991, when they moved to North Sioux City and joined Sacred Heart parish. John died in 1993.

Friends will be glad to know that Mary Margaret never lost her sense of humor. She was photographed dancing to '40s music just two days before her death. Never preoccupied with the sorrow of dying, she commented that same day that she could not wait to kiss Johnny again. One can say, quite simply, that she and her friends of that generation worked hard, prospered, raised good families and partied as frequently as possible.

A political liberal and always glad to cancel John's conservative vote, she looked forward to seeing a woman president in her lifetime. She thoroughly enjoyed her last months spent beside her beloved Missouri River. She light-heartedly hoped each day that a wolf would walk through the yard.

Mary Margaret is survived by a daughter, Terry Sheahan; and a son, John M. Beeson. She had four grandchildren, John S. Kuhn, Patrick R. Kuhn, Margaret M. Sheahan and Kate L. Sheahan; and a great-grandchild, David Mathisen. Her two sisters, Lois Doughtery and Delores Thoma, live in California; and her one surviving brother, Jim Hawkins, lives in Kansas City. John "Bud" Hawkins, another brother, died in 2004.

Pallbearers will be John S. Kuhn, Patrick R. Kuhn, Kate L. Sheahan, Margaret M. Sheahan, William McGowan and Keith Hawkins.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Merlin of London, Dar Fur Effort.
