Marjorie H. Haugen

Marjorie “Marj” Haugen, longtime resident of Courage Homes, passed away with loved ones by her side on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at MercyOne Hospital in Sioux City, IA. She was 75.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel at 1801 Morningside Ave. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 10:30 am at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel.

Marjorie Harriett Haugen was born September 5, 1948, in Soldier, IA, to Rolland and Clarice (Christiansen) Haugen. Marj resided at Glenwood State Hospital-School from June 14, 1950, until coming to Courage Homes on April 9, 1985. 

Marj attended Mid Step Services Work Center/Life Enrichment program where she packaged soft plastic fishing bait.

Marj was sweet, independent, and organized. She had the sweetest giggle. Marj liked strings, straws, bracelets, going on van rides, cottage cheese, people watching, and going with Katie and Elsie to visit their families.

Everything had a certain spot in the house according to Marj and if she believed it didn’t belong there, she moved it. Marj would make sure lights were on/off, doors were closed, and chairs were pushed in. Once she was satisfied, she would make her way to her favorite spot. You could usually find Marj in her favorite chair in the dining room observing her housemates, with a string, straw, or bracelet in hand. Usually, all three. Marj liked to participate in some house activities if she was able to find an item to take with her, otherwise she enjoyed watching from a distance. 

Marj had many friends at Courage Homes and Mid Step Services. She was a soft spot in many people’s hearts and will be greatly missed by her Courage Homes family and friends.

Marj is preceded in death by her parents and previous housemates at Courage Homes.
