Lorraine V. Scheer, age 91, formerly of Correctionville Iowa, passed away on July 22, 2023. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville. Visitation with family will be held one hour prior to the service. The burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon, Iowa.
Lorraine, the youngest of 12 children, was born to Joseph Henry and Johanna (Dohrman) Scheer on October 5, 1931, on the family farm in Woodbury County, Iowa. She graduated from Correctionville High School.
Lorraine lived most of her life on the family farm north of Correctionville until the Scheer family retired to town. She was a true caregiver her whole life and never complained. As a teenager, Lorraine began taking care of her ailing father and later her mother who was confined to a wheelchair. In addition to caring for her parents, she cooked, cleaned, and did the laundry for her 5 single brothers, both at the farm and later at their home in Correctionville. She took great care of her brothers as each of them aged and passed away. In the last 25 years of her life, she did all this while legally blind.
Lorraine was an excellent cook and always made wonderful food for the weekly picnics she had with her extended family. One of her nephews called her “the blonde who made brownies.” Lorraine loved to clean. For many years she cleaned not only the family house, but also the Methodist Church, the Correctionville Post Office, and neighbors’ homes.
Lorraine had a quiet but strong faith. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and active in many women’s groups and Bible studies. She loved her family and friends and showed them by her caring ways.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, all 11 brothers and sisters and their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. Her brothers were Aldre (special friend Hazel Mullicane), Edwin (May), Lester, Vern, Henry, Arlo and Alfred; her sisters were Alverta (Ted) Hauschildt, Sylvia (Carl) Wasmund, Maizel (Lawrence) Buettner and Helma (Donald) Krueger.
Lorraine is survived by nieces Donna (Ronnie) Christophersen, Brenda Olsen, Shirley (Grant) Scoles, Joann Hoefer, Delores Sonksen and Marjorie Hauschildt, as well as nephews Marvin (Vickie) Buettner, Dale (Pam) Buettner and Randy (Janet) Krueger.
