     Leo Carlberg, 84, died on Monday, December 25, 2023, from a brief illness at his home in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 29, 2023, at Mater Dei Parish – Immaculate Conception Church located at 1212 Morningside Ave., Sioux City, Iowa, 51106 with Father Brad Pelzel officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

     Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, located at 1801 Morningside Ave., Sioux City, Iowa, 51106, with a Rosary at 6:30 PM and a Parish Vigil Service at 7:00 PM.

     Leo was born on July 18, 1939, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Alfred and Julia (Zamberlan) Carlberg. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1957, and, except for his military service in the Navy, was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. Leo was united in marriage to Mardee Binnebose on May 30, 1964, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Leeds. Leo worked for Northwestern Bell in construction and lines maintenance. When Northwestern Bell and AT&T merged, he was a toll technician. He was proud to be accident free his entire 36-year career at the phone company. He was part of the Communication Workers of America and Pioneers Retirement group. Leo was an active member at the American Legion Post 697. He enjoyed playing softball at Hubbard Park and Floyd Ball Field. He enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles, Jumble, computer games, working on cars, and watching sports. He was an avid fan of Heelan, Packers, Steelers, Boston Red Sox, and the Hawkeyes.

     Survivors include his wife, Mardee Carlberg; daughters, Teresa Emge of Piersen, IA, and Sherrie (Chris) Cole of Sioux City; son, Leo (Donna) J. Carlberg of Sioux City; grandchildren, Kaylee Carlberg, Brandan Bahmer, Allison Carlberg, Kaitlin Cole, Jacob Grove, Hunter Cole, and Erick Carlberg; step-granddaughter, Whitney Keairns; great granddaughter, Kalina Barton; step-great grandson, Xander Keairns-Taylor; sister, Anna Carlberg of Sioux City; brother-in-law, Marlin (Ruth) Binnebose of Freemont, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 Leo was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Catherine Gerhart; sister, Ruth Ahrens; brother, James Carlberg; sister, Lucia March; and sister, Mary Davis.
