John Warren Hansen, 85, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, in Sioux City following a sudden stroke.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Third Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jennifer Santer officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Emerson, Neb. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
John was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Waterbury, Neb., the son of Stephan and Lena (Barr) Hansen. He grew up and attended schools in Waterbury.
He married Kathleen Winegardner in Omaha on April 19, 1948. After a short residence in Nebraska, they moved to Sioux City as their long term residence for 59 years. He farmed with his family at Waterbury until the age of 26. He was a long time roofer with Guarantee Roofing for 39 years and retired in 1987. In retirement, he worked part-time for Consumer Feed until 1994.
He was a lifetime guitar player and a favorite at barn dances in the 1940s and 1950s. He also enjoyed reading history. The couple are members of Third Presbyterian Church in Morningside.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; a brother, Elmer Hansen of Waterbury, Neb.; sisters-in-law, Elsie (Kenneth) Hansen of South Sioux City, Joann (Willard) Vraspir of Omaha, Margaret (Vernon) Curry of Jacksonville, N.C., Joann (Ernie Winegardner) Meis of Sioux City, and Nadine (Jake) Winegardner of Morgantown, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Charlie and Connie (Bottger) Winegardner of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Martha; brothers, George, Harry and Kenneth; and in-laws, Marian and Clara Hansen, Harold and Alice (Winegardner) Lewin, Bernard and Effie Winegardner, Willard Vraspir, Vernon Curry, Ernie Winegardner, Herb Meis and Jake Winegardner.
Pallbearers will be Calvin Hansen, Gordon Hansen, Phil Oakes, Gerald Bennett, Don Gamble and Gary Franken. Honorary pallbearers will be Russell Winegardner, Rick Winegardner, Mark Winegardner, Jeff Winegardner, Randy Winegardner, Todd Vraspir and Doug Curry.
