Janice Joan Smith, 73, of Sioux City died Friday, June 15, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel. Following the service Wednesday, there will be a luncheon served at the Siouxland Historical Railroad Museum Milwaukee Shop in Riverside. Following the service, the body will be cremated. Burial will be in Soldier Valley Cemetery, Pisgah, Iowa. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Janice was born Aug. 9, 1933, in Little Sioux, Iowa, the daughter of Wayne and Ruth (Blunt) Alton. She was raised in Little Sioux, graduating from Little Sioux High School in 1952. She moved to Sioux City in 1958.
She was married to William E. “Bud” Smith on Oct. 21, 1958. She was the owner of the J.J. Roofing and Snow Removal Company for nearly 40 years.
She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. She loved to read and had a very large collection of post cards. She was a pen pal for many years with people in Boston and Kansas.
She is survived by her husband, William “Bud” Smith; by her three cats whom she adored, Sir William, Sir Lancelot and Tasha; a sister, Armada Grasma of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Eugene and Marge Alton of Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two nephews, Don and Ron Grasma.
A memorial has been established in her name in care of the family.
