Janet L. Lukens, 92, former Sioux City resident, passed away at Bethany Life nursing home in Story City, Iowa.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Grace Lutheran Church (1101 S Cornelia St) with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Janet was born on April 29, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was the youngest daughter of Henry and Wilhelmina (Reiken) Buhman. She attended Sioux City Public Schools and graduated from East High School in 1951.
She married Lyle Lukens and they raised four children. Janet loved music and made sure all her children took music lessons. She and Lyle made it to all the concerts and marching band performances. When her children were in school, she worked for the Sioux City Public School District. Family was very important to her. Holidays meant making her family’s favorite foods. Travel meant visiting children, grandchildren and relatives. She always looked forward to the yearly family vacation to Alexandria, MN. Hobbies included flower gardening, crocheting, and decorating her home with her crafts. She and Lyle enjoyed playing scrabble and watching the birds at their backyard feeders.
Survivors include her children Keith (Polly) Lukens of Story City, IA, Laura (Rick) Riggs of Papillion, NE, Jim (Deb) Lukens of Seattle, WA, and Mike (Joyce) Lukens of Columbus, MS. Grandchildren include Eric (June) Lukens of Cedar Falls, IA, Jon (McKenzie) Riggs of Shelby, NE, Joseph (Angela) Lukens of West Lafayette, IN, Daniel Lukens of Madison, WI, Ben Riggs of Houston, TX, and Kimberly Lukens of Hamilton, OH. Also surviving are 11 great grandchildren. Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle; her sister, Helen Jasman; her brother, Charles Buhman; and grandchild, Patrick Lukens.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to Grace Lutheran Church.
