Jan Clair Coon

Jan Clair Coon, 89, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, with his children by his side.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel (1801 Morningside Ave) with a Visitation taking place one hour prior. His final resting place will be Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jan was born on September 13, 1936, to Wayne and Harriett Coon in Sioux City, IA. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. On May 14, 1960, Jan married the love of his life, Charlotte Ann Wright.

Jan was an avid outdoorsman. He loved gardening, a manicured lawn, his dog Lucy, and shooting pool. Jan spent most of his career in the insurance industry in Sioux City as a partner with Grandy-Pratt Insurance. After retiring in 2001, he and Charlotte traveled back and forth to Mission, Texas, for the winters. He was also a stunt double for Elvis Presley.

Jan is survived by his sons, Jan and Laura Coon of Spirit Lake Iowa, Todd and Janet Coon of Sioux City; his daughters, Harold and Terri (Coon) Bills of Otsego, MN, Spence and Jody (Coon) VanRooyan of Sioux City, Jenny (Coon) Leidy of Omaha, and Cari (Coon) Brown of Omaha; siblings, Dave and Janet (Coon) Adam, Mike and Linda Coon and Cliff and Diane (Coon) Rehwoldt; as well as 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne; mother, Harriett; his wife, Charlotte; and his brother, Ron Coon.
