The Rev. Cooper was born June 8, 1924, in Sioux City, the son of Victor and Malinda (Karhoff) Cooper. He attended Immaculate Conception Grade School, Trinity High School and College and St. Paul's Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.

He was ordained to the priesthood on June 7, 1949, at Cathedral of the Epiphany by Bishop Joseph M. Mueller. He was first assigned to St. Ann's Parish in Vail, Iowa. Over the years, he served at St. Cecelia's in Algona, Iowa, Immaculate Conception Parish in Moville, Iowa, St. Mary's in Larchwood, Iowa, and Annunciation in Coon Rapids, Iowa. It was his foresight and unshakeable determination that brought this dream to reality. Known throughout the Diocese for his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He worked hard to encourage devotional groups with an emphasis on the rosary.

He is survived by two brothers and their wives, Bernard and Ruby Cooper of Sioux City and Dr. Jerry and Ilene Cooper of Ashland, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a baby sister, Mary Ann.
