Gary Dale Shelton, 84, passed away on June 5, 2024, at a local assisted living facility in Sioux City, Iowa.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 am on Monday, June 10, 2024, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel (1801 Morningside Ave). Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am following the visitation.
Gary was born on January 15, 1940, in Boone, Iowa, to Orville and Constance (Harvey) Shelton. At a young age, the family moved from Boone to Sioux City, where Gary grew up and graduated from Central High School. On April 13, 1963, Gary was united in marriage to Beverly Allan. From this union, they had three children: JoAnn, LeeAnn, and Steven.
Gary served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy, training to be a mechanic, before transferring to the Air National Guard. He served in the Air National Guard from 1968 to October 1990, during which time he served in Vietnam. On July 11, 1986, Gary was united in marriage to Linda Moss.
After his retirement from his military service, he continued to serve his community as he drove school buses for the Westwood Community School District. He was an active member of the Abu Bekr Shriners, the Elks Lodge, and the RATS (“Retired Air Technician”) of the 185th. In his spare time, Gary enjoyed playing cards, fishing, going to the casino, gambling, and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Shelton of Sioux City; daughter, JoAnn Bockelmann and her partner Dave Sulsberger; grandson, Justin (Jessica) Bockelmann and their children: Caleb, Natalie, and Cara; grandson, Jacob (Dawson) Bockelmann; granddaughter, Breea Bockelmann; daughter, LeeAnn Shelton; son, Steven Shelton and his children: Sabrina, Stephen, and Sydney Shelton; stepdaughter, Erin (Mark) Jefferis; sister, Marilyn Feauto; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Constance Shelton; brother, Jim Shelton; and sister, Karen Birk.
