Dorothy Blanche Edwards

Dorothy Blanche Edwards, 105, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at her home in Sioux City surrounded by her friends and family.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes Morningside Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes Morningside Chapel. The family encourages attendants to dress casually. 

Dorothy was born on April 19, 1918, to Charles and Esther (Ayres) Atwood in Sioux City, Iowa, at 6th and Water Street. She was the oldest of seven children. On September 25, 1937, in Sioux City, Iowa, she married Jess Wayne Edwards.

Dorothy enjoyed working puzzles of all kinds, reading, going to the casino, helping her son Tom sell souvenirs at the local racetracks, and loved being surrounded by her family and friends. She was called mom or grandma by many friends, especially by her friends from the dirt tracks. In April of 1980, Dorothy retired from full-time work at the Hollar Stamp Co. She was a member of the American Legion Post 64 and the Sioux City Eagles for over 30 years.

She is survived by her son, Darrell Edwards of Diamondhead, Mississippi; her sister, Ruth Grossenbacher of Kissimee, Florida, who Dorothy raised after her parents’ passing; her daughter-in-law, Virginia Edwards of Sioux City, Iowa; and over 70 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess; parents; brothers Jack, Bill, Bob, and Elmer; her sister, Helen; her sons, Charles, Neil, and Tom; and her daughters-in-law Patricia and Betty.
