Donald Dean Herbold, 86 of Sioux City, Iowa died on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Unity Point Health St. Luke's in Sioux City, Iowa.
A Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday at Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 149 Bison Trail in Dakota Dunes, SD with the Rev. Jeremy Richert officiating. Interment will follow the service at Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Ave., Sioux City, IA. with a prayer service at 7:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Michael Kumm officiating.

Donald Dean Herbold was born April 14, 1938, on a farm near Correctionville, Iowa, to Adolph L. and Caroline (Knaack) Herbold. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville. He attended rural school and graduated from Pierson Consolidated High School in 1956. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa State Teachers College, now University of Northern Iowa, in 1960 and a Master of Science degree from Colorado State University in 1966. He also served in the Iowa Air National Guard from 1961 – 1967 and was honorably discharged.
Don married Judith D. Hodoway on December 21, 1963, at the Hawarden United Methodist Church. The couple raised three girls Anne, Amy, and Cheryl. God blessed them with 58 years of marriage! Judy entered Heaven's gate on March 8th, 2022. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Don worked as a speech therapist in the public schools of NW Iowa. He was the past president of the Iowa Speech, Language, and Hearing Association. He helped establish the first Lost Chords Club for laryngectomees in Sioux City. In 1978 Don entered the life and health insurance business. He retained his license until 2011, when he retired. He was the past president of the Sioux City Life Underwriters Association. He was a member and past president of the Sertoma Breakfast Club.
He was a faithful servant, whether it was teaching Sunday School, serving on church council, and many other various committees, volunteering to fold the church bulletins, and helping Reverend Tom Lovan with the Lutheran Asian Ministries (LAM) with financial support to grow their ministry work within Southeast Asia Region (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam). He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dakota Dunes, SD.
God blessed Don with his three daughters and their husbands, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He cherished every visit and phone call from them.
Don is survived by his three daughters and their spouses; Anne and Dan Strempke (Olathe, KS), Amy and Duane Jolivette (Newton, IA) and Cheryl and Dan Byers (Madison, AL; eight grandchildren: Katelyn, Andrew (Katie), Sarah (Michael), Ryan (Johanna), Abby (Dan), Justin, Joshua and Jonathan; one great grandchild Abel along with several nieces and nephews Don was preceded in death by his wife Judy, his parents and two brothers Albert and David.
In lieu of flowers family suggests memorials to The Sioux City Sertoma Breakfast Club or Lutheran Asian Ministries (LAM at Morningside Lutheran Church).
