Derald "DJ" James Shinkle

Derald James Shinkle, fondly known as “D.J.,” passed away at the age of 92 on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. 

DJ was born in Yankton, SD and a proud resident of Chicago’s North Shore for over 50 years. DJ was loved in the community and was ordained as one of the first Permanent Deacon’s in the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese in 1978. DJ loved the Catholic Church and was very active at both Sacred Heart Church in Winnetka and St. Joseph’s church in Wilmette. DJ enjoyed volunteering at countless fundraisers for both parishes and a founding volunteer of Sacred Heart’s well-known annual event named “Nite Lites.” DJ was also a proud Knight of the Holy Sepulcher with the Catholic Church. 

Beloved husband of the late Kathleen Star Shinkle for 55 years; loving father of the late Lisa Patt (Stephan), Monique Blair (Michael), Ray Shinkle (Suzy), James Shinkle, and Honor Shearer (Brian); devoted grandfather of Ariel, Paris (Elizabeth), Talia (Clay), McKenna, Patrick, Mary, Zach, Henry, Billy, and Charlie; loving great grandfather to Brayden, Liam, Arthur and Finley; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews; and dear friend to many more.

Under the direction of Donnellan Family Funeral Services, visitation will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, 10:30 am to 11:30 am at Saints Joseph & Francis Xavier Parish (Saint Joseph Church, 1747 W. Lake Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091) with Mass to follow immediately at 11:30 am. The live streaming will be hosted on the church's YouTube page and it will begin at Mass time.

Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, IA, under the direction of Christy-Smith Funeral Homes in Sioux City, IA.
