Delores Jean Steele, 93, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2026, at a local nursing home in North Carolina.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church (1112 8th St) followed by Burial at Calvary Cemetery. The family invites those in attendance to gather for lunch at Pizza Ranch (3116 Floyd Blvd) after the service.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Larkin Chapel (2320 Outer Dr. N) with a Parish Vigil held at 7:00 PM.
Delores was born on March 5, 1933, to Herman and Alice (Dunn) Broderson in Cherokee, Iowa. She graduated from Heelan High School in 1950 and earned her associate’s degree from Morningside College (now Morningside University).
On March 5, 1954, Delores married William E. Steele in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple were together for almost 30 years before William’s passing on July 5, 1982. Delores stayed in Sioux City for 65 years before moving back to Cherokee, Iowa, residing there for 12 years, until finally settling in Smithfield, North Carolina, since around 2013.
When she lived in Sioux City, Delores was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. In her spare time, Delores enjoyed researching her family’s genealogy and reading a good book.
Delores is survived by her sons, Mark Steele and David (Shelly) Steele; daughters, Kimberly (David) Richardson and Kelly (Don) Demaree; daughter-in-law, Cindy Steele; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Alice Broderson; husband, William Steele; brothers, Joe Broderson and Bob Broderson; son, William “Billy” Steele; and daughters, Patricia Jasman and Amy Full.
