Chester Martin "Chet" Bahrke

CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa -- Chester M. "Chet" Bahrke, 84, of Correctionville died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville. Interment will be in Correctionville Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Chet was born on May 13, 1923, in Correctionville, the son of Albert M. and Lucille May (Heckenlively) Bahrke. His formative years were spent in Correctionville. After graduating from high school in 1940, he joined the U.S. Army. After five-plus years, he was discharged in December 1945, after having served in the South Pacific. In July 1946, he re-enlisted and after serving in Germany, France, Korea and Okinawa, and attained the rank of Warrant Officer W-2. He retired in May 1961.

Civic duties included the American Legion Post, American Red Cross, Cub and Boy Scouts, volunteer fire department and umpiring local softball games. Chet was an avid fisherman, an avid cribbage player, obtaining the perfect hand when he was 64 years of age and was an avid reader of historical romance novels. He also enjoyed watching game shows and sports on TV, especially golf.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean Meyer of Sioux City, and Sharon (Louis) Saladino of Cedar Park, Texas; two sons, Michael Bahrke of Cushing, and Eric (Linda) Bahrke of St. Joseph, Mo.; two sisters, Hazel (George) Moore of Cherokee, Iowa, and Sis (John) May of Correctionville; three sisters-in-law, Rosalee Bahrke of Correctionville, LaVonne Bahrke of Neola, Iowa, and Donna Jean Bahrke of Pierson, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, John (Erika) Saladino, Paul Saladino, Christopher Saladino, Chris (Jason) Still, Craig Bahrke, Cara (Tony) Ashley, Ashley Bahrke and fiance, Cory Joy, Nathan Bahrke, Jessica Bahrke and Sarah Bahrke; eight great-grandchildren, Halle Still, Alec Still, Anteres Ashley, Arianna Ashley, Aziah Ashley, Ava Ashley, Makenzie Joy and Sarya Bahrke; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Clara Mae; and three brothers, Leo, Bill and Rip.
