Charles 'Chuck' Allen Schoonover

Charles “Chuck” Allen Schoonover, 86, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at a local nursing home in Sergeant Bluff.

Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 4, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel (1801 Morningside Ave) with a Visitation taking place one hour prior. Deacon Dennis Brockhaus will be officiating.

Chuck was born on June 19, 1939, in Platte, South Dakota, to C. Harold and Helen (Benda) Schoonover. Chuck served his country in the United States Navy from July 1958 until he was honorably discharged in July 1960.

Chuck met Suzanne Grueniesen, and the couple had 5 children together. Chuck married Doreen K. Trapp on July 30, 1982.

For work, Chuck was a carpenter for the Sioux City School District and Holtz Construction. He was a member of the local Carpenters Union and St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Chuck is survived by his children, Robert (Theresa) Schoonover, Rick (Carol) Schoonover, Ronica (Doug) Ryan, Chad (Jenny) Schoonover, and Erik Schoonover as well as his 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doreen; sister, Virginia Hardgrove; and great-grandson, Cayden Cullenward.

The family would like to thank Embassy Rehab and Care Center for their love and compassion they gave Chuck. Also, they would like to thank Lori from Synergy for her loving care while he was at his home.
