Betty Jeanne Epling (Spry)

May 12, 1918 — October 27, 2007

MOVILLE, Iowa -- Betty Jeanne Epling, 89, of Moville died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at a South Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Moville. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith McCulloch Chapel in Moville.

Betty Jeanne Spry was born May 12, 1918, near Sioux City, the third child of Hugh Spry and Minnie Jones. She was raised on a farm near Sergeant Bluff with her two brothers, Harlan and Robert, and a sister, Virginia. She attended school in Sergeant Bluff and graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School in 1936. She went one year to Iowa State University, where she and Leroy Epling met. They were married Dec. 10, 1938, at the Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff.

The couple first lived on the old Epling homestead, in a home with no running water or other modern facilities, where their son was born in 1940. They later moved to a newer home on a farm south of Moville and lived there for more than 45 years.

She was very active in the Farm Bureau in the early years and later with 4-H, Woodbury County Extension, school activities, the Woodbury County Fair where she was the flower superintendent and always the church, the Moville Federated Church at that time. Later, she was a member of the Moville Garden Club, Moville Women's Club and other community groups. The Moville United Methodist Church was a big part of her life and she spent many, many hours there in church groups, working in the kitchen and attending worship services. When she wasn't taking care of her family, cooking great meals, baby-sitting her grandsons and later her great-grandsons, she did crafts of all kinds, tended her flowers, fed the birds and crocheted countless afghans.

The couple moved into Moville in 1990, where they retired and did a lot of traveling, yard work, gardening, bird watching and taking care of great-grandsons. They moved into assisted living in Lawton, Iowa in March 2007.

She leaves behind Leroy, her husband of more than 68 years; her son, Larry and his wife, Betty Ann; her grandson, Brian and his two sons, Curtis and Seth; a grandson, Robert and her former granddaughter-in-law, Kim, all of Moville; her sister, Virginia and Joe Reichel of Aurora, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Spry of Normal, Ill.

She has gone to with God now, where she is with her parents; two brothers, Harlan and Robert; and so many friends.
