CLIMBING HILL, Iowa -- Anna Mae Surber, 85, of Climbing Hill died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at New Life Community Church, 4800 Stone Ave., Sioux City, with the Rev. Bill Boehm officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Anna Mae was born May 16, 1922, in Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Adolph and Bessie (Lord) Sorenson. She grew up in the Castana and Soldier, Iowa, area, attending school in Castana.

She married William "Bill" Surber on Oct. 16, 1941, in Omaha. He died Jan. 28, 1991 in Sioux City. She had lived in Moorhead, Iowa, South Sioux City and the Lawton, Iowa, area from 1962 to 1972. She had lived in Climbing Hill since 1972. She had worked at the Lawton School for one year as a cook in the lunchroom. She then worked as a cook at the Biltmore Restaurant for 33 years, retiring in 1996. She also cleaned homes and ironed for people.

She enjoyed stock car races, doing jigsaw puzzles, painting, her yard and flowers and listening to music by Alan Jackson. She also enjoyed her family and grandchildren and her two little dogs, Baby and Spike.

Survivors include two daughters, Darla Card and her fiance, Jack Lobdell of Climbing Hill and Marilyn and her husband, Randy Haafke of Bronson, Iowa; a son, Stanley Surber of Sioux City; a granddaughter and her husband, Tina and Danny Lundquist of Sioux City; two grandsons, Kirk Haafke and Kyle Haafke, both of Bronson, Iowa; two sisters, Marge Lund of Soldier, Iowa, and Eva McPheeters of Valparaiso, Ind.; two great-grandchildren, Shawn and Shalynn Lundquist; two stepgrandsons, Klayton Hanson and Danny Hanson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Clifford Card Jr.; a granddaughter, Debbie Surber; a grandson, Shane Surber; a stepgrandson, Tim Card; a sister, Edna Olson; a brother, his wife and son, Frank and Doris Sorenson and Frank Jr.

The family suggests memorials to New Life Community Church.
