Robert Lawrence "Bob" Hackett

SIOUX CITY | Robert L. "Bob" Hackett, 87, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at his residence following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Bob Hackett was born on Sept. 7, 1925, in Sioux City, the son of John Thomas and Mary (Flynn) Hackett. He graduated from Trinity High School in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1945 to 1946, stationed at various location throughout the Pacific Theater. He finished his military career as a member of the military police in Japan at the end of World War II. After his honorable discharge from the USMC, he attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa for two years. He returned to Sioux City and worked for the U.S. Postal Service.
On Aug. 11, 1951, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Curtis at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City. To this union, three sons, Curtis, William and Timothy, were born. Bob retired from the Post Office in the mid-1970s, then worked as a contractor for a number of years.
Bob was a humble man with a generous heart. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to family, friends or anyone in need. Bob especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family, quietly accepting his unofficial designation of patriarch at Hackett family reunions. He will be greatly missed.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Marilyn; two sons, William (Jo) of Sioux City, and Tim (Barbara) of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Larschan of Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elaine Costello of Kirkwood, Mo., and Sister J.T. of Dubuque, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, infant Jack Hackett, Gerald Hackett of St. James, Minn., and Charles Hackett of Sioux City; a sister, Mary Marriott of Granville, Iowa; and a son, Curtis "Dan" Hackett of Oshkosh, Wis.
