Father Michael Larkin

January 24, 1941 — May 26, 2018

Rev. Michael T. Larkin, 77, of Sioux City, died Saturday, May 26, 2018, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home, after several years of illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Most Rev. R. Walker Nickless and other priests of the Sioux City Diocese concelebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Fr. Larkin was born on Jan. 24, 1941, in Sioux City, the son of Philip and Eileen (McGrane) Larkin. He attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and graduated from Heelan High School in 1959. After high school, he attended Holy Cross Seminary in La Crosse, Wis., Loras College, St John's Benedictine Abbey in Collegeville, Minn., St. Bernard's Seminary and did his graduate work at Creighton University in Omaha. He was ordained a priest of the Sioux City Diocese on June 1, 1968.

Larkin's assignments during his career included: faculty, Kuemper High School, Carroll, Iowa from 1968-1973, parochial vicar, Holy Spirit Parish, Carroll from 1971-1973, faculty/administration, Spalding High School, Granville, Iowa, from 1973-1978, parochial vicar, St. Mary Parish, Alton, Iowa from 1973-1978, faculty, St. Edmond High School, Fort Dodge, Iowa from 1978-1982, parochial vicar, Sacred Heart Parish, Fort Dodge from 1978-1982, faculty, Bishop Garrigan High School, Algona, Iowa from 1982-1985, pastor, St. Matthew Parish, Clare, Iowa, attending St. Joseph, Barnum, Iowa from 1985-1986, pastor, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Mt. Carmel, Iowa from 1986-1987, pastor, St. Rose of Lima Parish, Denison, Iowa from 1987-1991, pastor, Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Moorland, Iowa from 1991-1993, faculty, St. Edmond High School, Fort Dodge from 1991-1993, pastor, St. Mary Parish, Humboldt, Iowa, attending Sacred Heart, Livermore, Iowa from 1993-1997, chaplain, Nursing Homes of Sioux City from 1997-2011, retired from 2011-2017
He is survived by seven brothers and sisters, Shaun O'Meara of Hudson, Wis., Maureen and David O'Meara of Shakopee, Minn., Gene and Nancy Larkin of Pleasant Hills, Calif., Lael Larkin of Sinsinawa, Wis., Sister Kerry Larkin, OSM, of Omaha, Dennis Larkin of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Pat Larkin of San Francisco, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Kevin.
