Mary Ann Coffey

Mary Ann (Mummert) Coffey, 84, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Parish-Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m.Sunday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Mary Ann Mummert, the daughter of Police Capt. Paul and Matilda (Schwartzmyer) Mummert, was born Feb. 1, 1933, in Iowa. She attended St. Boniface grade school and went on to graduate in the first graduating class from Heelan High School in 1950. Mary Ann attended Briar Cliff College for one year and then worked in the office of Swift Company for several years.
Mary Ann then attended St. Joseph School of Nursing, graduating in 1962. Upon graduation, she was awarded the class Outstanding Nurse Award. Mary Ann then worked in pediatrics at St. Joseph Hospital.
In 1965, Mary Ann married John Coffey at St. Boniface Church. Their marriage was blessed with four wonderful children. In 1976, she graduated from Westmar College and went to work at St. Joseph School of Nursing as a clinical instructor. In 1986 after the school closed, she went to work for Easter Seals as a Home Health Nurse, eventually becoming the Director, retiring in 1996.
During retirement, Mary Ann enjoyed many years of being grandma to her 10 adored grandchildren. She also enjoyed volunteering. Mary Ann was a Reach to Recovery as well as a Road to Recovery volunteer for many years. She was a long-time volunteer at Holy Spirit Retirement Home and an active member of the service club there, as well as serving on the Care Review Committee. Mary Ann always enjoyed her years of volunteering at Siouxland District Health Department. She was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000. Working with the staff resulted in her making some special friends.
Mary Ann always felt she was blessed with very special friends, including life-long friends, Diane Zimmer and Karen Tagatz. Two very special people in her life were her nieces, Connie Brittan and Liz Olsen and their families. She welcomed them to share her home as their home.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband, John of Sioux City; her children, Diane Gilreath of Sioux City, Paul (Erika Newton) Coffey of Omaha, Teresa (Chris) Payer of Sioux City, and Monica (Nick) Stabile of Sioux City; grandchildren, Brooke, Veronica and Jacob Gilreath, Kellen and Kaitlyn Coffey, Ben, Emily and Luke Payer, and Cooper and Sophia Stabile. The family would like to thank the staff at Holy Spirit and Mercy Medical Center, 6th Floor.
They also would like memorials directed to the Carmelite Monastery or the Bishop Heelan Catholic School System.
