John Francis Gard

John Francis Gard, 76 of Lexington, Kentucky died on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, surrounded by his family.

A Funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel located at 1801 Morningside Ave. Sioux City, Iowa 51106. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Ave., Sioux City, Iowa.

John was born November 18, 1945, in Sioux City, Iowa to Lowell and Frances Gard. He grew up on the family farm east of Sioux City. He graduated from Lawton High School and went on to earn a business administration degree from Wayne State College in 1968 in Wayne, NE. In the fall of 1968, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. After basic training, John was commissioned and sent to Officer Candidate School and became a 1st LT serving his country in the Marine Corp until the spring of 1972. After his service in the Marines, John went to work for the United States Department of Education as an accountant until his retirement in 2017 when he moved to Lexington, Kentucky.

John enjoyed teasing people and just having fun. He loved life and living it to the fullest. John enjoyed camping in West Virginia. He loved remodeling houses and coming up with plans on what he wanted to do. John enjoyed hiking and being outdoors and going for drives through the countryside. He had fun playing computer solitaire and Mahjong.

Surviving are son, Michael Gard of Colorado Springs, CO, daughters, Denise Gard of Colorado Springs, CO, and Erica and her husband Nick Tate of Colorado Spings, CO, a grandson Johnathon Gard and his partner Carolyn Atwood and their two children Sylvie Gard Atwood and Lars Gard Atwood, a granddaughter Ravyn Benson of Maple Grove, MN, brother Roger and his wife Carol Gard of Danville, IA, sisters, Crystal Gard Kurtze of Omaha, NE and Candi and her husband Robert Smith of Hereford, AZ., sister-in-law Julie Gard of Sioux City, former spouse and mother of his children, Diana Gard of Colorado Springs, CO, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Lowell and Frances Gard, and a brother, Kenneth Gard, grand parents and numerous aunts and uncles.
