Harvey Henry Stokes Jr

June 3, 1941 — October 26, 2020

Harvey H. Stokes Jr., 79, of Sioux City, died Monday, October 26, 2020, due to a long battle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2021, at Faith United Presbyterian Church, Pastor for David Koehler, officiating. A luncheon will follow. Christy-Smith Funeral Home, Morningside Chapel, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Harvey H. Stokes Jr. was born June 3, 1941, in Sioux City, to Harvey and Doris (Morris) Stokes, Sr.

Harvey graduated from Sioux City Central High School, Class of ‘59. He graduated from Morningside College with a Bachelor of Science in Education and received his Master of Education from USD. Harvey taught math at West Jr. High and West High School. He was employed by Sioux City Schools for 35 years. He retired from teaching in 2001.

Harvey married Carolee “Kelly” Cooper on Dec. 27, 1961, in Houston, TX.

He was a long-time member of Third Presbyterian Church and later Faith United Presbyterian Church. He sang in the choir for over 50 years. Harvey served as an Elder, Trustee, Sunday School teacher and Superintendent and a member of the Men’s Club. He was instrumental in the establishment of Faith United Church.

Harvey and Carolee enjoyed taking trips around the country. They covered the country from Alaska to Hawaii, New York to Texas. They took several cruises. He enjoyed taking fishing trips to Minnesota with his family. Harvey looked forward to each Stokes’ Family Reunion.

Harvey is survived by son, Jon (Amy) Stokes of Edgemont, SD; daughter Erin (Stephen) Cobbs of Waynesboro, Pa; his six grandchildren, Trevor and Carly Stokes of Edgemont, Kyle (Nicole) Stokes of Rapid City, SD., Emily, William and Samantha Cobbs of Waynesboro, Pa.; Three great-grandchildren, Layla, Landon and Logan Stokes; sister Ruth (Dean) Snyder of Sioux City; brother Walter (Connie) Stokes of Tyler, Tx.; sister Doris Stokes of Eden Prairie, Mn.; sister-in-law Mary Stokes of Sioux City; Sister-in-law Marty (Frank) Wilson Carrollton, TX; brother-in-law Marvin Jensen of Sioux City and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carolee; his daughter, Kathleen; his granddaughter Sara Cobbs; his parents; sister Eleanor Nielsen; sister Gladys Jensen; brother Donald Stokes; and sister Martha Stokes.

Memorials may be directed to Faith United Presbyterian Church.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
