George Nassiff

June 25, 1931 — November 2, 2019

George J. Nassiff, 88, of Sioux City died Saturday, November 2, 2019, at a local hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday at Christy-Smith Funeral Home Morningside Chapel with son, David Nassiff presiding. Visitation will be Tuesday, 4:00-8:00 PM. Family present 6:00-8:00 with prayer service at 7:00.

George was born June 25, 1931 in Sioux City, to Frank and Anna Nassiff. He graduated from East High School. He served in the army during the Korean War. George attended Morningside College where he played football. On July 9, 1955 he married Margaret Swinney and together they raised four children. Margaret passed away November 23, 1997. George married Harriett Petersen on September 1, 2002.

George was employed at several meat packing plants and served in union leadership. After retirement he worked for Green Valley/Floyd Valley Golf Courses. He was a former member of Morningside Church of Christ where he was baptized. He was most recently a member of Whiting Christian Church. He loved playing, coaching and watching sports. He coached Little League at Westside and Pulaski Parks for over 20 years. He coached 2 city championship teams and was president of Morningside Little League. He was on bowling teams and played fast-pitch softball for several years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and working puzzles. He also enjoyed cooking and even cleaned up afterward. He had a huge heart, which showed through his generosity and kindness. He loved family, having fun with family and cherished time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Harriett; daughters, Karen and her husband Greg Miller from Sioux City, Kathy and her husband Matt Wentz from Le Mars; son David Nassiff and his wife Tamara from Ankeny; step-children, Kim and her husband Jeff Westphal from Casey, Blain Petersen and his wife Kay from Essex. He is also survived by one sister, Mary Nassiff from Van Nuys, Ca.; 17 grandchildren, Steven Miller, Daniel Miller, Melanie Lien, Patricia Miller, Elisa Zabel, Danielle Moody, Justin Wentz, Tiara Butts, Emily Willis, Jared Nassiff, Brennan Nassiff, Samuel Nassiff, Zachary Westphal, Heidi Hammer, Valerie Westphal, Chase Duckett, and Cailea Petersen; and 23 great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; son, Jeff; two infant children; and siblings, Edwin, Louise, Rose, Rosella, Oscar, Joe, and Sally.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. George requested memorial gifts be given to his grandchildren raising support for their campus ministries and church planting, payable to First Church of Christ-George Nassiff Memorial Fund, 310 NW Ash Drive, Ankeny, IA, 50023.
