David Howard Luhman

February 15, 1946 — August 18, 2021

David Howard Luhman, age 75, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, died on Aug. 18, 2021 at a Sioux City, Iowa hospital after a brief health battle.

David was born on Feb. 15, 1946, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Bernard J and Kathryn (Lahr) Luhman. Growing up on the family dairy farm David learned the value of hard work. He never shied away from any hard work. He loved working in the yard in Sergeant Bluff, and was happy to help a neighbor move snow in the winter. David graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1964. He continued his education at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Ag Business.

After college, David was drafted into service and fulfilled a tour of duty in Vietnam from March 17, 1969 to May 14, 1970 when he was honorably discharged. He always joked that his high school typing class saved his life when it took him off the front lines.

During his life, David lived in Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, Tekamah, Neb. and Shenandoah, Iowa before moving to Sergeant Bluff in 1988. He worked as a National Bank Examiner for the OCC for most of his career with the exception of the years he worked for banks in the early 80s. After retirement part 1 David started a banking consulting business which landed him several contracts with local banks. The most recent was at Heritage Bank until retiring again in October of 2019.

David was blessed to marry twice. He married Elaine Perra on Sept. 20, 1974, in Howard Lake, Minnesota. They were married for 28 years until her death on Aug. 2, 2002. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Joseph, Mark and Sarah. He married Constance Oleson on Aug. 21, 2004, in Sioux City, Iowa. They shared nearly 17 years of marriage and were united by their strong faith in Jesus.

David was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and, most recently, Sunnybrook Community Church, both in Sioux City, Iowa. His faith was the cornerstone of his life and he lived it out loud with everyone he met. Over the years he participated in numerous bible studies and small groups, Via De Cristo, choir, men’s chorus, care core ministry (hospital visitation), chairman of church finance, chairman of the planning and zoning commission of Sergeant Bluff for 28 years, many other church and community projects, and recently Sunnybrook’s Men of Valor.

Over the years, David enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time with friends and family. In retirement, he loved golfing with his fellow RGA (Retired Golfers Association – loosely organized fun group of guys). David also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity doing new builds and renovations.

Survivors include his wife Constance, two sons, Joseph Luhman of Shakopee, Minnesota and Mark Luhman (Jessica) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a daughter, Sarah Luhman of Shakopee, Minnesota; step sons Tim Oleson (Kandy) of San Diego, California and Tony Oleson of Burnsville, Minnesota; two sisters, Elaine Stueven and Sandy Engel, both of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; sister-in-law Rose Luhman of Weslaco, Texas; grandchildren Delainey and Daniel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and so many more friends and family.

David is preceded in death by his father and mother; his wife Elaine; his sister Betty Carlson, his brother Stan Luhman, his brother-in-law Craig Engel and his brother-in-law Tom Parnell.
