William J. Westhoff

November 9, 1938 — February 11, 2018

William "Bill" Westhoff, 79, of Sioux City, passed away February 11, 2018, surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a time of sharing at 7 p.m., at Christy Smith Funeral Home's Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Ave. in Sioux City. A celebration of life service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5010 Military Road, with the Very Reverend Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family requests contributions be made to the Mayo Clinic (philanthropy.mayoclinic.org) or Diocese of Sioux City (scdiocese.org/give-online) in Bill's name in lieu of flowers.
Bill was born November 9, 1938, to Lawrence and Celia (Kramer) Westhoff in New Vienna, IA. He grew up in New Vienna and graduated from St. Boniface High School in 1956. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and served for 6 years before returning to work for the family business in New Vienna. He moved to Sioux City in 1964 to expand the business by establishing Westhoff Livestock Transportation out of the Sioux City Stockyards.
Bill was formerly married to Mary Jankord and had five children: Kristen, Amy, Carrie, Joseph (Joe), and John. He spent many summer days boating on the Missouri River with his family as his children grew up. Bill was always very social and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He was a die-hard Iowa Hawkeye fan and a member of the I-Club. Bill continued to operate Westhoff Livestock Transportation until the Sioux City Stockyards closed in 2000, but that did not stop him from working. He recently celebrated 15 years of service at Bennett Drive Away, delivering Winnebago RVs to dealers across the country. Although Bill was known to work most of his life, he was also full of life; and didn't let too many things slow him down. In his later years, he met Barb Bindner and they enjoyed their Saturday afternoon routine together: mass followed by dinner and a drink. Bill also loved his grandchildren and they all loved their "Grandpa Bill."
Bill is survived by his children, Kristen Jones of Council Bluffs, Amy Derby of Sioux City, Carrie (Justin) Tanis of Charlotte, NC, Joe Westhoff of Omaha, and John Westhoff of Tempe, AZ; his grandchildren, Reese, Emily, Alicia, Jake, Kourtney, Jack, and Kenzi (Jones); his girlfriend, Barb Bindner of Remsen and her children, Sara (Dan) Krier and J.J. (Tia) Bindner; and his siblings, Lou Ann Wieneke, Dan (Mona) Westhoff, Dick Westhoff, Fred Westhoff, Larry (Mary) Westhoff, Bob (Debby) Westhoff, and Linda (Dennis) Vavricek.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Kevin Jones.
