George Duzik

George Duzik Jr., 96, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at Countryside Retirement Center in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Erpelding will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a third degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 6 p.m., a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. followed by a fourth degree Knights of Columbus chalice service, all at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. He was born on Saturday, Nov. 2, 1918, in Denison, Iowa, the son of George and Margaretha (Hildebrandt) Duzik. He came to Sioux City in 1928 and graduated from East High School in 1936. In 1937, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Europe during World War II. He left the active service in 1945. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1950 to 1972, retiring as a chief warrant officer four.
George married Mary Jean Walding on May 18, 1942, at Camp Polk, La. He worked as a switchman for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 33 years. He retired in 1979. Mary Jean died on Nov. 13, 2009, in Sioux City.
George was a longtime and very active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City. He was also a member of the third degree Knights of Columbus, Epiphany Council 743 and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Garrigan Assembly. George was a former member of the Southern Hill Country Club and the Moose Lodge. He served on the board for Telco Triad Credit Union and volunteered at Marian Health Center doing life line repair. George also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are sons, Don and Terry Duzik of Sioux City, John and Barb Duzik of Sioux City, and Dean and Kate Duzik of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Showalter and Jean Garrison; and longtime family friend, Mary D. "Sam" Hacker of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Joseph in infancy; and two sisters, Bertha Bradshaw and Margaretha "Tootie" Michener.
