Cherish Our Children Walk - Each second Sunday of September a special event is be held to bring together people from our Siouxland community who share a common bond: they have all experienced the death of a child. Anyone is invited to participate in the "Cherish The Child" Walk, as it will be a chance to stand together and remember children or all ages who have died and will never be forgotten. The walk begins at 1:00 p.m. (rain or shine) at our Christy-Smith Resource Center, 1819 Morningside Ave., Sioux City. It finishes at Latham Park (approximately 10 blocks away) with a brief remembrance service. Refreshments are served at our Resource Center following the remembrance service. BROKEN SILENCE SUPPORT GROUP is a program for adults who have experienced the death of a loved one through suicide. The program is both an educational and a group experience where participants can talk about their feelings in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. The program is directed by Brenda Zahnley, Director of Bereavement Services at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Mrs. Zahnley holds a Masters degree in counseling and has both personal and professional training in the dynamics of grief. Broken Silence is offered for seven consecutive weeks. The time frame is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the sessions are held at the Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., Sioux City, Iowa. Picking Up the Pieces: A Young Widow's Support Group:
This is a 5-week support group for women "35-50ish." This group combines educational components as well as a safe environment to share feelings openly with other young widows. Periodic meetings with social events will follow the 5-week structured format. The timeframe is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and meets at the Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., Sioux City. Picking Up The Pieces is facilitated by Brenda Zahnley, MSE, the bereavement counselor at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Community of Daughters:
This 4-week grief group is for any woman who has experienced the death of her mother through illness, accident, sudden death or suicide. You will be provided with educational information about the grieving process as well as provide you with a safe environment where you can express your feelings openly without criticism or judgment.
